AWS’ Zip Lock Mouth SyndromePosted on September 19, 2007Filed Under Companies, Innovation, web 2.0 | Amazon has a legitimate game changer on their hands and most of the thought leaders I talk with agree, Amazon Web Services should be called Awesome Web Services. In the last 2 days I have talked with 4 completely unrelated companies and at some point in the conversation it comes up "oh yeah, we’re building out on EC2" or "we’re using S3".
Case in point is DigiSense, run by a good friend of mine, Avery Lyford. In a nutshell, DigiSense provides managed service providers (MSPs) a turnkey system for disaster recovery and backup that is fully encrypted and integrated with Microsoft SBS and Active Directory. DigiSense provides all of the front end with encryption and out-of-the-box integration, Amazon S3 provides the backend storage infrastructure.
DigiSense is able to deliver this solution and reconfigure the economics that MSPs are currently saddled with because S3 takes a massive amount of cost, and risk, out of the system. It’s good for DigiSense because they deliver something that is order-of-magnitude better, and it’s good for MSPs because they can lower their cost structures and broaden their market opportunity while increasing margins.
You would think that Amazon would be touting these case studies and telling everyone who will listen about the new industry they are creating. Nothing, nada, zip, zero.
If this was just about Amazon it would be one thing, but the fact is that companies like DigiSense have an uphill battle with investors who don’t understand the radical shift in infrastructure that is occurring because of AWS. Amazon has an obligation to help the companies that have invested in them become successful not just by providing a great set of services, but also through leveraging their brand to promote their partner successes.

Jeff, the EC2 part of AWS is still in beta. Why? I’m not certain but this could be a factor in the lack of marketing. AWS has been working great during our experiments- granted we aren’t provisioning but 1 AMI instance. I am amazed at how economical these services. Very compelling for start-ups with limited resources.
Amazon did announce the start-up challenge which may mark the end of their Zip Lock Mouth.

Amazon Start-up Challenge…
Amazon.com Startup Project / Startup Challenge I’ve blogged a bit about how much I like Amazon’s Web Services. This startup contest is bound to be a hit with entrepreneurs. While the official price is 50k$ in cash and 50k$ in……

Jeff,
Actually, Amazon has begun to promote AWS recently. Last week, the company held developer events in San Francisco and Silicon Valley where startups presented their S3 and EC2 success stories, and several VCs talked about why they like to see startups use AWS.
It definitely opened my eyes to the possibilities with S3. Although, it sounds like EC2 leaves startups with a big engineering problem: how to deal with a database that disappears when the EC2 instance goes down. (There’s no persistent storage.)

Jeff, pardon me for being a bit off the marketing topic.
Amit, have you had an instance go down with out you actualy terminating it manually? We did find it interesting that EC2/S3 live side-by-side in the same house. We are still diving into the SLA/Ts&Cs but my gut feeling is there is not a big engineering problem but quite the opposite. That said, there are certainly risks that will need to be mitigated.

Amazon is beginning to crank up the marketing effort for web services
1) AWS roadshow - SF & Palo Alto last week
2) AWS Newsletter - featured Digisense in May
3) Hiring people with developer relations experience
Understanding the business implications of the architectural shift is the big challenge. It is akin to the impact of open source.
